Serenity means many things to me. It means being at peace with yourself and having achieved a state of acceptance that there are some things that are just out of your control. It means knowing your place in this world and being content with that place. It also means understanding your own capacity for growth and what you can reasonably accomplish. However, above all, serenity is an ongoing process that requires active participation and introspection. This is much easier said than done, which is why there are so many people in our society that find themselves in a state of turmoil and anguish despite keeping up the appearance that they are alright. Serenity also means surrendering yourself to the fact that you are imperfect and because of this, you will inevitably make many mistakes throughout your life. That, in my opinion, is the hardest part of maintaining serenity, but it's also the most crucial. Am I in a state of serenity at the present moment? No, but I'm making the best effort I can to take the necessary steps in order to achieve that state. Serenity doesn't mean giving up when faced with adversity, it doesn't mean being completely in touch with yourself either because that's something that can never completely be achieved anyway. Rather, serenity is the state of awareness and acceptance of who you are, what your place in life is, what you are capable of accomplishing, and what your natural limitations are. Serenity is rare, but it is something that should constantly be pursued, and truly appreciated when it is achieved.
