I hate this phrase. I really do. If one uses this idiom, it's very much a reflection of their mindset and that is a mindset of defeatism. It is a mindset of negativity, of one who has given in to cynicism and doubt. I love the phrase "best case scenario" because it essentially means the same thing, but it's reflective of a choice of a different mindset. "Best case scenario" is a mindset of pragmatic hope. If one chooses to use this phrase in place of "lesser of two evils" it means they have a better outlook and that they haven't given up. In this world there are far too many "glass half empty" people, and to be clear, that is really what this entry is about. Glass half empty vs. glass half full. The simple truth is that we all have the choice of what lens we look at this world with. I know that in times such as these, the temptation to have a "lesser of two evils" mentality is stronger than ever, but it is also more important than ever to cast that mentality aside. It is crucial not to succumb to defeatism, because once one does so, it's much harder to come back from. As someone who has given up in the past, I can say this from experience. To those who have had the luxury of having been spared circumstances when they have been tempted by the "lesser of two evils" mindset, I congratulate you. But two those who haven't been so fortunate, this entry is more for you. This entry is an urgent reminder that there is a choice, and if you choose incorrectly, the consequences are dire. I am very much a person who believes that the direction of the mentality of society very much affects the literal direction. The zeitgeist is a fragile thing. It can be very easily swayed one way or another, and I firmly believe that we are in a period in history when the importance of maintaining a positive perspective has never been so paramount. I'm writing this because I have witnessed far too many people saying the words "the lesser of two evils" and I wish for nothing more than to see "best case scenario" replace those words that I hate with such vigorous passion. When people say such things as "lesser of two evils" they are admitting defeat. They are admitting that they have allowed their outlook to become so bleak that they don't care. It's similar to the "fuck it" entry that I wrote a little while ago, but it's just not as blunt. This will be a short entry, because I feel as though I've already made my point multiple times so I'm just going to finish by simply saying what I want anyone who is reading this to do. In your vocabulary, replace "the lesser of two evils" with "the best case scenario".
