Jeffrey Epstein is a name that's pretty much been impossible to escape in the news lately so I figured this is a topic worth discussing. Because of all of his high profile connections, the notorious financier and convicted sex trafficker has really blown up and gripped the nations attention. Obviously the most recent development in the story is his death which has spurred a seemingly endless barrage of conspiracy theories regarding what many people think really happened. I'll admit that the idea of him being able to commit suicide in a high security prison is somewhat suspicious, but I'm also a person that looks at conspiracy theories with much skepticism. Everyone seems to be so quick to claim that he was killed with no substantial evidence to prove this. Many are saying that he was going to out co-conspirators and that's why they got to him but if you actually read into the matter you'd know that his claims to have "dirt" on many high profile figures were dubious at best. I know the idea of a conspiracy is just too juicy for many to pass up, but I really wish people would fight the urge to start spouting off whatever thought comes into their head before they see some actual hard evidence. I get it, we live in a crazy world. Crazy things happen all the time and sometimes truth truly does turn out to be stranger than fiction, but I'm not so sure that's really the case here. What do I think happened? Well, here's what I know; Jeffrey Epstein had just been convicted of multiple heinous and unforgivable crimes. His life was over the second the judge banged the gavel. At one point he lived a glamorous life, he had mansions all over the world, had built up an impressive fortune, and lived a quality of life that many couldn't even dream of. That all came to an abrupt end. His sickening secrets were out and there was no coming back from that. The files had been released and he was simply waiting until the inevitable trial where he would have to display his unfathomable shame to the world. Taking all that into account, suicide seems like a likely course of action anyone in his position might consider. Everyone seems to be overlooking all of that in favor of the theatrical and admittedly headline gripping idea that someone in his dark and sinister circle was able to use their substantial influence to get him killed while in custody. However, the reality is that this simply hasn't been able to be proven, yet the theories are still running wild and many people, due to the fact that they've surrounded themselves with conspiracy theorist outlets have come to accept those theories as truth. I've come to accept that fact that I live in an age when there will always be circles where this kind of stuff thrives and probably wont be able to be extinguished. Even if substantial and undeniable evidence for what really happened were to be made public, some people would find ways to reject it, and that's just an unfortunate fact. Still I take solace in the fact that those individuals and groups don't constitute a majority of society by any means. They're simply one obnoxious subsection of our collective culture that just seems to be having a larger than normal period of coverage in our time. I know conspiracy theorists are nothing new, it's just that today they have more ways to get their words heard and amplified, which makes it seem like they're more of an influence on the world than they actually are. Anyway, back to Epstein. He was a truly sick individual that represented the worst traits humanity has to offer. What he did to all those girls was unforgivable and my only regret concerning his situation is that I think he got out too easy. I truly hoped that he would have spent the rest of his miserable life locked up with nothing but the knowledge that the entire world knows what he did, haunting his every waking moment. He didn't deserve the sweet release of death, at least not for a long time. In my opinion he truly did "take the easy way out". At least, the easiest option for anyone in his circumstance. What do I think about co-conspirators? Honestly I'm still waiting to find out. It's definitely not too out there to think that he's not the only demented individual in power, and it's well known that he was a very outgoing and connected man in powerful circles including but not limited to royalty, presidents, celebrities, and millionaires alike. I truly hope that he ends up being the thread that society pulls to unravel any and all remaining pedophiles and sex traffickers that may still be in power while keeping their crimes against the innocent in the shadows, but only time and further investigation will tell. Needless to say, I'm sure we'll all be paying close attention to how things unfold.
