I'm not sure what exactly spurred this most recent wave of legislative action on the subject of abortion (particularly in Alabama) but I will say that my opinion on the matter hasn't changed. That opinion is that whether you agree with it or not, if it's not your body then it's not your call to make. I think that the father of the embryo should have a say in the matter of whether or not the mother is going to carry the pregnancy to term, but the final call is hers to make. I don't like labels, but if I had to describe myself, I guess what I just said would make me pro choice. I say that because while I wouldn't encourage abortion in every instance, I think the option should always be there. I'm extremely aware of the religious objections that many people may have to abortion, and those people also can make their own choices to carry their pregnancies to term if that applies to them. Pro choice does not equal pro abortion, no matter how much people will piss and moan that it does. I understand that this is one of the most controversial subjects on the national stage, and I understand that I may be alienating some people by being open about it, but I believe that it's more crucial to have dialogue than to keep a handful of acquaintances that may disagree with you. If there is no dialogue, there can be no progress. While many people are fearless in discussing this matter, there are also far too many people who aren't so brave and choose to remain silent. While that may be the safe option, it's not going to lead to any kind of progress. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, or so the saying goes. To state the obvious, I've obviously never been pregnant and will never experience such a state so I feel that it's not my place to tell someone what they can or can't do when it comes to their own lives. One thing that really gets under my skin when it comes to people talking about being "pro life" is the hypocrisy when it comes to other issues. I've met many people who tout how "pro life" they are, while supporting war and capital punishment which no matter how much I try to understand it, I simply can't. Roe V. Wade is the law of the land, whether you agree with it or not. That's my view.
