In any civilized society, rules are absolutely crucial. It doesn't matter if you agree with every single law that is put into place, what's important is that there is at least something to set the bar of what is and is not acceptable. For the most part, laws protect us and set in place a precedent for what we believe in as a society. Do I agree with every single law that my country, state, and city has in place? Of course not, but I recognize that the concept of law in general is necessary to set a scene of order and safety. Let's look at some of the most basic laws that most people agree with for starters; killing is illegal, stealing is illegal, rape is illegal. These are all laws that I would hope everyone agrees with, but as with anything, at some point we enter a sea of grey area. That area is when it comes to laws such as those concerning drugs, trade practices, and other nit picky sorts of subjects. While I don't agree with every single law, again, I think that they are crucial in order to have on paper a set of principles that we as a society deem necessary for order to be secured. The best thing about laws is that, at least in this country, they can be changed. As society grows and changes, the principles we hold so too also change, and we are lucky enough to live in a place where as that happens, we can alter the rules that there in apply. Not everyone in the world is so lucky. Many people live in places where laws are ridiculous and they don't have a say in whether or not those laws that effect them can be changed. In instances when I feel a law that applies to me is unnecessary and repressive, I try to remind myself of that very important truth. Whether you agree with every single law is irrelevant, because they set the precedent of order and stability that is crucial for any civilized society.
