I can't say that I'm the worlds biggest fan of electronic dance music, but I can see what would draw people towards it. I think the biggest factor that makes it so popular is the theatrical nature of it. All of the music festivals I've seen pictures and videos of depict fantastical light shows and performances by the DJ's which wrap the crowd up into a frenzy of rhythm and motion, and I won't lie, that's pretty entertaining to watch. I could only imagine what it would be like to be a part of such performances/experiences, and while I think I'll be attending a festival such as Electric Forest or Spring Awakening at some point in my life, I don't think I'll ever make my whole life about them like some people I know have. Yes the light shows are pretty cool to watch, but I've been to concerts of regular bands and they can be just as enjoyable to watch while at the same time showcasing music that I actually like. I think the reason I want to attend an EDM festival at some point is mainly because I just want to be able to say I've had the experience. I used to bash electronic dance music a lot, and then a friend of mine said I should at least give it a chance before dismissing it all together, which I'll admit was a fair point to make. However, one thing that is holding me back from booking a ticket right away is the fact that there is a massive drug culture surrounding EDM and I'm not a drug user anymore. Yes I experimented with Molly when I was in college, but it was just that; experimentation. I didn't even like it as much as some other drugs I tried, and if you need to abuse substances in order to really appreciate something, I don't think there's really that much about it to appreciate in the first place. However, I try to remind myself to keep an open mind. Obviously EDM wouldn't be as huge as it is if there wasn't something to it. While I don't plan on attending any festivals while I'm this early in my recovery, I do have it on the books to finally take my friends up on the offer of joining them to one someday, I'm just not ready for it now. While I couldn't name one EDM artist off of the top of my head, I still try not to knock any genre based solely upon what I've heard or seen about it without actually giving it a fighting chance first. That's the approach I'm taking with EDM.
