The Deep State

There are many conspiracy theories that sound like they could be plausible, that have a persistent glimmer of possibility that is impossible to remove entirely. That is the very fuel that keeps the flame of such theories alive. However, as is the case with many conspiracy theories, there are a few pretty significant holes in this one. Can I say without a shred of doubt that the supposed "deep state" doesn't exist? No. But I have to admit, I think it is less of an actual institution, and more of an excuse people, Trump supporters especially, use to explain whenever things don't go their way. "Trump wasn't able to get the greenlight for the wall? Damn deep state!" Really? Are you sure it had nothing to do with the fact that it's a wasteful and ultimately ineffective vanity project for Trump to build up his own ego? "Mueller is investigating the matter of the 2016 election? Damn deep state is trying to bring down our fearless leader!" Yes, and that has nothing to do with the pursuit of justice or the preservation of the integrity of our democratic elections. It seems like anything that these conspiracy theorist Trump supporters don't like automatically is because of the deep state. It's their boogey man, and it's their, pardon the pun, "Trump card". Here are a few issues that I have with the concept of the deep state. First of all, if it does exist, and is really as influential and powerful as many of these nuts have made it out to be, how did Trump manage to become president in the first place, and further more, why haven't they been able to remove him? Let's say President Trump really is the good guy, let's say he's the hero we've been waiting for that is fighting this insidious deep state, but tell me, how could he fight this institution by completely becoming a part of it? If the deep state is made up of corporate elites (which Trump is one), politicians (which Trump is one) and the military industrial complex (which Trump is in charge of) How can he fight something that for all intensive purposes, he is a part of? That simply doesn't make sense to me. I think that believing that there is this powerful evil organization tangled deep within our government that is hell bent on hindering our president, is easier to believe than to accept the fact that maybe, just maybe, he simply isn't very good at what he does. After all, before becoming president, he had absolutely zero experience in holding any sort of elected public service position, he failed in a very large amount of his business endeavors, and he got attention not by his accomplishments but by bucking the crowd and doing and saying controversial things. How hard is it to accept that a man with those credentials isn't going to be a very good leader, that you would rather dig yourselves in to the idea that there is this massive conspiracy to rig everything against him. Again, this just doesn't make sense to me. Again, while it's not possible to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the deep state doesn't exist, I just see too many holes in the narrative for me to consider it a viable possibility. I know that by writing this I'm most likely not going to be changing any minds. I mean, lets face it, if you read my blog regularly you most likely don't buy in to such concepts, and if you do, you'll simply see me as just another ostrich with its head in the sand that is unwilling to accept the "truth" of what's really going on in this country. If you are the latter, we most definitely disagree on many things, and try as I might, I doubt I'll be able to change your mind. Political factors aside, I will admit that it's an interesting concept to think about. I think the subject of the deep state could make a really cool fiction novel if a writer with the right prose for the job would take up the project. Definitely something fun to think about in the sense of fiction, but highly unlikely in the realm of the real world in which we live.
