Yes I've written about the subject of the alt right before, but their persistent efforts to continue the spreading of their toxic ideologies merits another entry in my opinion. The alt right is made up of a fairly wide range of political ideologies, groups, and individuals. Some are simply irritating, yet harmless trolls, while others are truly dangerous individuals that incite horrendous acts by disturbed individuals such as we have just seen in New Zealand. The most unsettling thing about the alt right is that so many of the most prominent individuals in the movement are much more articulate and polished than your traditional skin head or neo Nazi. This dangerous movement is a repackaged and refined espousal of those horrendous ideologies that has done an efficient job of conning many people into their ranks. Thin as the veil they have put up may be, I feel that their true nature is only obvious to those of us who can think critically enough to be able to see them for what they are. All too many others are effectively fooled by the façade and have foolishly joined the movement thinking it is something new and exciting. The wide disparity of the alt right, ranging from simplistic and annoying displays of memes, to articulate, well spoken, and convincing individuals is a very interesting concept to unpack. I think it represents the wide reach that the movement has, and explains how they have been able to attract such a varied following. The alt right is harmful to society, it is a stain on the political stage, and it is a movement that must be exposed for what it truly is and efficiently stamped out. One of the biggest problems concerning the alt right is that whether they realize it or not, many outlets and individuals are giving them a platform by taking the bate and allowing themselves to be swept up in outrage. That is playing right into the alt rights trap. It's not unlike the tactics espoused by our president. Deliberately doing and saying controversial and divisive things in order to gain attention is a fundamental and unfortunately very effective tactic of the alt right. I think that the best way to combat the alt right is to deprive them of their soap box. It is imperative that we not take the bate, that we suppress our out rage, think critically, and not give them the exposure that they so desperately crave. We as a society need to take the spotlight away from these deplorable people, and allow them to swiftly fade into obscurity where they belong.
