It's never pleasant to be denied something that you really want. Being shut down hurts like nothing else. We've all had to deal with rejection at some point, I know that I definitely have. For me personally, rejection leaves me with a persistent pit in my stomach that nothing but time seems to be able to alleviate. It gives me a powerful, almost overwhelming feeling of inadequacy that absolutely tears me apart inside. However, I look at rejection as an opportunity of growth and humility. I look at it as a chance to build up thicker skin and to make me a stronger person. I feel like everyone handles rejection differently. Some people are able to brush it off fairly easily, while others get absolutely crushed by it. Also, a huge factor concerning how we handle rejection is what specifically we are being rejected from. For example, we will handle rejection from a sports team differently than we would handle rejection from a love interest. The point is that what our priorities are have a powerful and intrinsic influence on the magnitude of the effect that rejection has on us. Another large factor is the personality and character of the particular individual dealing with rejection. We all have different measurements of what is important to us, and that is the largest influence on our response to being denied. Rejection is unfortunate, but it is a part of life that toughens us up, builds character, and makes us stronger individuals.
