I'm a man of simple tastes and simple pleasures. I've never really felt the need to spoil myself aside from on certain special occasions. While yes, I've splurged from time to time, I've never had the desire to have the flashiest or most luxurious possessions. Whether it be clothes, electronics, my car, or anything else, I've always preferred functionality over glamour. I'm not going to lie, I'm not a rich man, and I can't say for certain that my views would change if I were to come into wealth, but at the moment that's completely hypothetical. If I get a larger than normal paycheck every once in a while, I would make some frivolous purchases, but I can't say that I've ever bought anything particularly unnecessary, or something that I couldn't get a good amount of use out of. If I were to start making more money, I can't say for sure that my views wouldn't change. Maybe I would grow to have a fondness for the finer things in life. Maybe I would lose myself in luxurious practices, but I would like to think that I would keep a level head and that I would stick with my preference of functionality over luxury. One thing that I firmly believe, is that having the finest or flashiest things won't make you happy. So many people will attest to that. Happiness isn't something we can get from material possessions, at least not true happiness. True happiness is only something that we can give ourselves. I'm not saying that there is anything intrinsically wrong with luxury, after all, I think it's healthy for us to spoil ourselves from time to time, to give us something to strive for and look forward to. I think that material possessions, while again, won't give us true happiness, they do have the ability to make us comfortable. The people who think that luxury would make them truly happy are simply confusing comfort with happiness. Becoming dependent on material possessions for our "happiness" just isn't a sturdy foundation upon which to build our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health and well being. Again, there's nothing wrong with glamorous things, it's just that I think we shouldn't lose sight of what's really important in life.
