Evil

I think the reason that there is evil in the world is so that we can truly appreciate what is good. Without evil, the positive aspects of our lives would hold little significance. However, that doesn't change the fact that there are some evils so heinous and pointless that I have a difficult time comprehending the good that they highlight. War, famine, genocide, hatred, these are all horrendous evils that are painfully present in this world. While people are more than capable of despicable evils, I don't think anyone is either completely evil or completely good. There is a vast sea of grey area between the two and I think that most people fall in there. Some people seem to naturally gravitate towards evil though. It's as if they are just predisposed towards that path. Figures such as Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, etc. are known infamously as evil individuals, and while I definitely agree that they did some extremely evil things, I stand by my previous statement that no one is either completely good or completely evil. Even the most despicable human beings have done some good things in their lives. I think that good and evil are two sides of the same coin. Without one, the other can't exist or truly hold any significance. That doesn't change the fact that all too many people, myself included, have trouble coming to terms with the sheer magnitude of some acts of evil that are present in this world.
