I know a fair amount of people who think that government is a negative and binding influence in their lives. They think that the regulations and the bureaucracy have made it into an overly bloated and inefficient machine. I don't necessarily share that belief, but I do think that it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if governments were more stream lines and efficient. Some forms of government are more effective than others. For example, the government of the United States is, in my opinion, better than that of, say, Syria. The big factors, that I think are the biggest reasons behind an effective government, are stability and a balance of powers. The reason I believe that the representative democracy of the United States has lasted as long as it has is the checks and balances system. The system makes sure that neither the executive, legislative, nor judicial branches ever become too powerful or out of control. Obviously there are many forms of government ranging from communist dictatorships, to parliamentary, to constitutional republics such as the United States. None of them are perfect, and I think that the concept of government, due to the fact that it is run by imperfect human beings, will naturally be intrinsically flawed but that's not a reason to scrap the system all together. Rather, I believe that that means we have the obligation to make a continuous effort to improve upon the current existing governments that we have in place throughout the world. How successful each type of government is varies depending on who you ask. Some would consider a certain form of government to be the best, while others would say something different. It's all a matter of perspective. I think government is a necessary evil that needs to exist in order to keep society together and act as a stabilizing force in the world.
