It never fails to sadden and disappoint me to hear about someone allowing themselves to be swept up in ignorance and say or do something that regresses our society as a whole. Bigotry is a difficult societal issue to overcome because it's so deeply rooted in so many cultures around the world. Whether it be racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or any other form of intolerance, it is always moving us backwards as a whole. As much as it saddens me to say it, some people are just so deeply rooted in their hatred that they are beyond saving. They have closed themselves off and refuse to allow themselves to see the light. While there are individuals such as these that are lost causes, it does fill me with a glimmer of hope for the future that there are many more people who can be turned around and brought away from the path of intolerance. Bigotry is a learned mindset, which means it can be unlearned if a person is open to other ways of thinking. I'm hopeful because of a significant step forward that my generation has made; that step is that we've made bigotry socially unacceptable which is paving the way for a better future for everyone.
