Writing fiction is so much harder than most people think it is. Believe me, if it was easy I'd do it more often. I think the hardest part, at least for me, is keeping the plot consistent in all of it's elements throughout the story. I've never really had a hard time getting stories started, it's more the process of following through that often gets me stuck. Unfortunately, I have many incomplete fiction stories either on my computer, or in various notebooks hidden away somewhere. It's not just keeping the story consistent and flowing that is difficult for me, it's clearly wrapping things up that gives me a lot of problems as well. It's just such a more difficult process than most people realize. So many of us look at prolific authors and think "I could do that" until we actually sit down and try, when we realize that it's a craft that can only be mastered by a select few who have the natural gift for story telling. Obviously I can crank out plenty of nonfiction, but in all honesty, I often struggle with writing fiction.
