Confederate Monuments

I think that the only appropriate place for confederate monuments or paraphernalia of any kind is in museums. These things are nothing to be proud of, rather they are distasteful reminders of a dark and shameful period in the history of our nations history. It's not that I think such monuments should be destroyed or that I think they should be erased from history, I just think that having them proudly on display in public places isn't just in poor taste, it's a flat out slap in the face to everyone who loves this country. The confederacy was the epitome of everything anti-American. They broke away from and attacked the United States and that makes them traitors. To have a treasonous flag displayed publicly is, and there's no other way to describe it, utterly sickening. Growing up in northern Illinois, I haven't been exposed to any confederate monuments but I have been to the south a number of times and I've seen such monuments displayed. It's not a matter of "heritage", it's a matter of common decency, or rather, a lack there of. Treason should not be honored or celebrated, period. We must continue to tell ourselves that there is a fine line between remembering, and glorifying.
