Ever since I was a child, mythology has always captured my imagination and fascination. My interest was first piqued when I read the Odyssey and the Iliad, and after that, I was hooked from then on out. I got multiple books on the various polytheistic traditions from around the world and grew to appreciate each one for their own unique features, stories, archetypes, heroes, pantheons, and creatures. Greek and Roman mythology is what I first learned about, and from there, I went on to delve into Celtic, Nordic, Hindu, Egyptian, and east Asian mythological folklore. Celtic and Arthurian mythology (which often have shared intertwining themes) in particular interested me because of my interest in the roots of my own heritage. However, I have obviously studied a wide variety of pantheons and folk tales from around the world. There are so many timeless lessons we can learn from mythological tales that we can still apply to our lives today. The messages they have, the themes they employ, and the types of characters they surround are just as relevant in our lives today as they were during the ancient times when they were concocted. Some teach us about strength, some teach us about humility, some about justice, some about love, etc. Mythology isn't for everyone, but from what I can tell, those that do delve into it tend not to be able to get enough and I'm definitely one of those people.
