I don't have a problem with atheists in general. Most of them are perfectly nice and reasonable people who keep their personal beliefs to themselves. I do, however, have a problem with atheists that look down on others who don't ascribe to their same set of beliefs. In my opinion, atheists that do that are no better than the overzealous religious individuals that they think they are so much better than. Now to shift the focus away from those who adhere to this system of belief, to the concept itself. As far as I know, atheism is the belief that God doesn't exist. It is the belief that there is no way to scientifically prove that there is an all knowing, all powerful deity that created and sustains the world. Most atheists tend to be extremely rational and scientific people, many of whom are brilliant intellectuals. However, many of them are condescending moralists that believe they are smarter than others because of what they believe. I should say that I believe this is more the exception than the rule however. I can see what would lead someone to become an atheist. The world is random and chaotic and it's easy to see how that would lead someone to think that there's no higher power that's running the show. There are many other things that I think would lead someone to become an atheist, namely the concept of good people suffering terrible misfortune, while evil individuals often get their way. It's easy to see how that would make someone believe that, at least a loving God, doesn't exist. While I wouldn't call myself an atheist, I can obviously get an idea of where they're coming from. I won't say if they're right or wrong because I don't believe that's my call to make and I hope that if you're an atheist that you at least have that belief in common with me.
