There are many things that people do that get under my skin, but nothing does the trick quite like pollution. Throughout high school and college, I was in various environmentalist groups, and in those groups I took part in many clean up events. It never failed to disgust me how much people carelessly throw away. The sheer volumes of garbage that people throw out straight into our environment is absolutely infuriating. However, it's not just the pollution that individuals make, the biggest source of pollution is from large corporations that prioritize profits before the planet. It's always a somber experience for me whenever I drive by a factory or power plant and see the massive volume of pollution they dump into the air, water, and land. It's such a short sighted and selfish concept, what they're doing. Not only is the pollution made by corporations disgusting, the politicians whose pockets are lined with the dirty money of those corporations are equally nauseating. It's the same concept; putting money and power before our earth. Politicians don't just have a responsibility to be stewards of the people, they have the responsibility to save our planet, and far too many of them are willing to sell out the environment in order to hold on to their position of power. For Christ sake, there is basically an island of garbage floating in the pacific ocean serving as a testament to the carelessness and short sightedness of humanity. Humanity needs to make some seriously substantial changes before it's too late, and I feel that that time is coming very soon. I know this entry has been a lot of doom and gloom, so now I'm going to go over the bright side. That is, that while there are many people and organizations that obviously don't care about the pollution that they're producing, there are also many who aren't willing to give up and let them do whatever they want. Many green organizations are putting in the hard work to both prevent and undo the damage that humanity is doing to our environment. The fact that there were so many environmentalist groups in my high school and college experience is a testament to that. Not only are there student groups, there are organizations made up of adults who truly do care and who truly are willing to do what needs to be done in order to curb the massive volumes of pollution that many are producing. In our short time on this earth, man kind has done some nearly irreparable damage, there are many who aren't willing to give up without a fight, and that's what keeps hope alive for me.
