While it wasn't as big as many would have hoped for, I'm pretty happy that the Democrats took control of the house yesterday. It was amazing to see win after win when it came to congressional seats as well as to see so many Democrats unseat republican governors, particularly in my home state of Illinois. I did my patriotic duty yesterday. I went to the polls, made my voice heard and was pleasantly surprised to see most of the candidates I voted for win. While JB Pritzker is far from perfect, I believe he will do a much better job as governor than Rauner which is why I voted for him. I was a little disappointed that Beto O'Rourke lost in the Texas senate race but seeing as it's Texas, a deeply red state, I remained realistic and didn't get my hopes up that he would unseat Ted Cruz. It was still crazy to see how close that race was, and it gave me hope for how things will go in 2020. It's so much more of a big deal than people realize that the Democrats took back the house. Because of this, the asshole in chief will remain kept in check for the rest of his, hopefully, last two years as our president. It means that it's highly unlikely that each of his horrible ideas will come to fruition. It means that a stopper has been placed on the wrong path that I believe our country is on concerning politics. Not only did we take over the house (yes I said we, since I've officially come to terms with the fact that I'm a democrat and I'm no longer afraid to admit it) but we made history. There is now the first openly gay man as governor of a state, there are now two Native American women in congress (which is long overdue in my opinion). We now have two black women and two Muslim women in congress which shows that this country has come a long way in the area of diversity and truly having a congress that better reflects the demographic of our country. While it's definitely exciting that we now control congress, I was still disappointed that we weren't able to flip the senate. I know it was a long shot so I mentally prepared myself for the likely outcome of the senate race. Never the less, I was very happy with the results of the midterms. Now that they're over, it's time for Democrats to walk the walk and work hard on delivering the promises they made that got them into office. Another thing that I'm really happy about is that there are so many new faces on the Democratic scene, faces that could become potential candidates to hopefully unseat the current con man we have as a president. It's going to feel like an eternity for these next two years, but I remain hopeful that one of these rising stars will develop into the man or woman that will get our country back on the right track.
