No one can deny the massive cultural impact rock and roll music has had on society. From Elvis and Chuck Berry to the seemingly endless subdivisions of the genre that we have today, rock and roll truly is a timeless genre of music that will last throughout the ages. I, and probably most other people, associate rock music with a sense of youthful rebellion. Rock and roll, to me, is about going against the current of what society expects from us. It has always been that way since it's advent. After all, back in the early 50's, as many of us know, rock and roll was considered "devil music" and was overall rejected by the older generation as the younger generation seemed to embrace it and partake in the massive cultural movement. No other genre of music really speaks to me the way rock does. It's not only catchy, but the underlying themes are inspiring such as individualism, rebellion, and freedom to do what you want. There are many subdivisions of rock so I guess I'll go into a few of them. Punk rock has got to be one of my favorite subdivisions of the genre since it has a strong nostalgic factor to me. I remember the first type of music I got into when I was in grade school was 3rd wave punk music such as My Chemical Romance, Blink 182, Sum 41 and all of the other cheesy teen bands. Even though the music of such bands isn't particularly deep or difficult to replicate, there is a simple elegance to it's catchy riffs and relatable themes. Funk Rock is another genre I got into for a time, particularly the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other similar bands. Bands like them have a real groove to them which makes them very easy to get into. Grunge rock is another genre that I like to listen to if I'm in the mood for it. Bands such as Nirvana, Peal Jam, Sound Garden, and Alice in Chains are some of my favorite grunge groups. Obviously there are tons of other subdivisions of the genre but for the sake of keeping things short and sweet I'll stop it there. For everyone whose gone through a rebellious phase in their youth (which is most people) rock and roll music speaks to them and reminds them of the days when they were young and eager to buck society. That's the real impact of rock and roll, it allows us to relive and enjoy those old days.
