History has always fascinated me. I've always loved learning about the pivotal events that have occurred in the past to shape the current world we live in. I believe that learning about history isn't just interesting, it's crucial. Learning lessons from our past shows us where we've been and also shows us how to avoid previous mistakes. Although I haven't done much with my minor in history, I'm glad I chose that academic path because it opened my eyes to the importance of history. Man kind has done so many incredible things but we have also made some horrendous mistakes. Even if I could, I don't think I would make the choice to change events throughout history, mainly because I believe that most things happen for a reason and it's more important to learn from our mistakes instead of avoiding making them in the first place. We learn something from every tragedy. We take something away from each mistake that we make. It's incredibly fascinating to learn about the various paths human kind has taken, but it's also astonishingly sobering to learn about the dark places and events that we've been through. Throughout history there are genocides, atrocities, and countless examples of powerful people giving in to their lesser desires and having a profound impact on the pages of our past. However there are also countless instances of incredible people, nations, and groups doing amazing things that changed the world for the better. I believe that people are neither inherently good nor inherently evil, and the stories throughout history are mainly where I base that belief on. I find revolutions particularly interesting. Learning about both individuals and groups of people rising up to make substantial change in their respective time and place is absolutely fascinating to me. Whether it be the American revolution, the velvet revolution, or the countless revolutions throughout Latin America, I can't help but look in awe as I read through the pages of our past and learn about the monumental impact those people have had on history. The all together best part of history, is that it is ongoing. We are experiencing history every day. Some current events, even if they may seem miniscule at the time, prove to be incredibly profound as they leave their mark in the pages of history. Where we've been is just so crucial to learn about because it provides guide points of where would be best to direct the future. Even if you're not a history buff, you can't deny that.
