My generation tends to get a lot of flack from older folks, and while I do know that some of it is well deserved, many of the good aspects of millennials are woefully overlooked. Previous generations love to tout their work ethic and their "go getter" nature, however they fail to take into account the different circumstances that the various generations are born into. The economy is quite different now from when it was back then and there are many luxuries that previous generations had that are no longer available. Another trait that I admire about my generation is our sense of social responsibility. While admittedly political correctness gets out of hand from time to time, I believe it is truly commendable that people of my age take it upon themselves to be so involved and active in making our society a more equal place for everyone. In my opinion, this is largely due to the general need we feel to right the wrongs of those that came before us. Although blatant racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. isn't nearly as prevalent as it used to be, we are well aware of how things used to be and make active efforts to curb bigotry where we see it. I mean, there is a flip side to that, and that's when political correctness gets out of hand. My generation does have a tendency to overreact and often makes mountains out of molehills but I believe that the overall sense of social justice outweighs those who make it ridiculous. Another thing that my generation is often criticized for is having a sense of entitlement. I wont deny that this is often very true for many individuals but on the other hand, I think that we have different needs from those of previous eras and most millennials are simply trying to get what they need in order to get by. Although there are both good and bad traits exhibited by my generation, I believe the best trait out of them all is our ability to adapt. Millennials are extremely proficient with technology and are at the forefront of each new medium that springs up. Millennials learn quickly and feel the urgency to update and modernize any field that they enter. I think there is a persistent desire in those of my generation to move forward and although sometimes we get distracted with meaningless fodder, that drive is what is making fantastic changes in society and I know that it will continue to do so for generations to come. Millennials may be hated by some people from previous generations but I feel like that happens when any new generation comes around so I try not to take it personally when someone talks down to young people. There will always be those who believe that their generation is superior and that "things were better in those days", but the biggest thing to understand is that "those days" are over, and it's time to move forward with today. When I get older I'm going to try to refrain from talking down to younger generations, lest I become just like those who have talked down to my generation. I like my generation, and I can't wait to see what else we come up with.
