This was such a big topic of the last presidential race that I feel it is worth getting into. Do I think there should be a wall along our southern border? In short, no. I think it's a ridiculous idea. For one thing, it would be absurdly expensive and most likely would be funded by tax revenue which would go over very poorly. I don't know why the president ever thought he could force Mexico into funding such an expensive and impractical structure. In my opinion he either legitimately thought it could be done, or he knew it couldn't and was just blowing smoke in order to stoke his supporters. If the later is true, he was successful to an extent, seeing as so many of those on his side got very fired up on the idea. Another big problem I see with the idea is that I don't think it would do all that much to curb illegal immigration. First of all, a large portion of illegal immigrants come over by plane, which a wall would do jack shit to stop. Another big thing is that all the wall would do would be increasing the use of tunnels and increase the height of ladders. One more big problem is that many immigrants come here legally and then their visas expire, which, again, the wall would do nothing to prevent. I think the best way to curb illegal immigration across our southern border would be to increase incentive to immigrate legally and to form a clear, practical, and concise path to citizenship for those that are already in the country. Another obvious problem with the wall idea is that much of the border is made up of rivers, mountains, and cities, making the idea fundamentally unfeasible. I'm glad that the wall idea has fizzled out because ultimately, it would be ineffective, expensive and impractical.
