I know this can be a bit of a touchy subject for some people but just bear with me. I think that religion is only as controversial of a subject as people choose to make it. OK, where to start? Personally, my own religious views would fall under the category of agnostic. I think that the concept of God is entirely possible seeing as there so many things in this world that we can't understand and never will, therefore the possibility of God can't be ruled out. On to the concept of religion in general, I see it as a double edged sword. It's done a lot of good for the world, as well as caused much harm. The harm I would largely attribute to moralistic people who feel that their beliefs make them superior to others. Now that kind of behavior isn't confined to people of faith. Hell, some atheists are some of the most condescending moralistic people I've ever met. But I digress. I don't feel the need to condescend people because of their beliefs because I haven't lived their lives and if they find some fulfillment in their lives through religion then that's great for them. If religion gives you hope, a sense of purpose, and drives you to do good to others in the world, then I think, in that sense, religion is a great thing. I think some people get too caught up in the specific nit picky details of religion and end up overlooking the basic tenants of being an overall decent person that most religions teach. Even if you aren't religious, it's a huge part of humanity, each religion has many lessons from which we can learn and that's why I think it's important to at least have a moderate understanding of the various faiths that people hold throughout the world. I think that whether you are religious or not, there are some universal principals that most of society can agree upon and I think that should be what people focus on instead of what specific beliefs make you "wrong" or "right".
